Sulfonamides are a group of complex synthetic organic chemical compounds with chemotherapeutic activity they have a common chemical nucleus which is essential for antibacterial. Sulfonamides have antibacterial activity against Gram positive like Staphylococcus aureus,Streptococcus agalactiae , Streptococcus dygalactine and Corynebacterium pygenes and Gram negative Escherichia coli ,Salmonella spp.,Klebsiella spp . and Pasteurella spp .Sulfonamides compete with para – amino benzoic acid (PABA) for enzyme that synthesizes dihydrofolic acid in bacteria. It is synergistic with trimethoprim. Bacteriostatic. like other sulfonamides, it has abroad spectrum of activity, including gram – positive bacteria, gram –negative bacteria, and some protozoa. However, When used alone, resistance is common
Swine : Treatment of enteritis and respiratory diseases caused by bacteria sensitive to sulfamethazine and sulfathiazole such as Mycoplasma gallisepticum and E.coli
Cattle : Treatment of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, metritis, enteritis, foot rot, mastitis and shipping fever complex caused by P. Multocida and E. coli
CATTLE , SWINE
Sulfamethazine : Cattle and Swine : 100 mg of Sulfamethazine base /Kg
Sulfathiazole : Cattle and Swine : 50 mg of Sulfathiazole base /Kg
Swine : 1.7 gm of product / 10 kg BW in drinking water
Cattle : 1.7 gm of product / 10 kg BW in drinking water
If improvement is not seen within 48 hours, medication should be discontinued and diagnosis and the treatment re-evaluated. Generally, treatment should not exceed 4 days.
Treated animals should have easy access to drinking water to maintain an adequate hydration and miction.
Do not administer in swine feed.
Associated with sulfonamides include allergic reactions, Type II and Type III hypersensitivity, arthropathy , anemia , thrombocytopenia , hepatopathy , hypothyroidism ( with prolonged therapy ) , keratoconjunctivitis sicca , and skin reactions
