Otsel is a combind anthelmintic of Oxfendazole , Triclabendazole and Selenium. It used for treatment of benzimidazole-sensitive mature and immature roundworms, lungworms, tapeworms, and early immature ( including 2-week old fluke), immature and mature liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica ) in cattle and sheep.
Triclabendazole is abenzimidazole anthelmintic which acts in of immature and adult fasciola hepatica. It inhibits colchicine binding to microtubular protein suggesting interference of the drug with microtubular structure and function. The drug strongly inhibits the release of proteolytic enzymes in immature and adult parasites, a process dependant on microtubular function.
Oxfendazole is benzimidazole anthelminitic .It possess anti-mitotic properties, and this action is related to their capacity to bind to tubulin leading to inhibition of formation of microtubules. This, in turn, leads to disruption of cell division. Eventually cell lysis and disintegration occur,
It may concentrate preferentially in intestinal cells of parasites to exert its toxic effects initially and principally at this site.
Selenium is as a component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX). The exact role of GSH-PX in mammalian cells is not fully understood but it is thought to act by protecting cells from oxidizing agents which are capable of irreversibly denaturing essential cellular proteins which leads to degeneration and necrosis, resulting in muscular weakness and white muscle disease commonly associated with selenium deficiency. It is believed that a deficiency in selenium can cause a decrease in the humoral response of animals to vaccination and increase the susceptibility of animals to disease. The symptoms are most pronounced in young fast growing animals.
