Monensin (as sodium) 120 g

Properties:

Monensin is a member of the pharmacotherapeutic group of polyether ionophores, specifically the carboxylic subgroup. They are the product of natural fermentation products produced by Streptomyces cinnamonensis. It binds to bacterial cell membranes and interferes with the maintenance of important ion gradients in the cell which are needed for the transport of nutrients and to generate proton-motive force.
The ultimate effect of monensin within the rumen is to shift the microbial population resulting in a decrease of the bacteria that produce acetate and butyrate and increasing the bacteria that produce propionate, the gluconeogenic precursor. As a result of the change in the population of bacteria within the rumen, efficiency of energy metabolism is improved. In the peri-parturient dairy cow, the positive effects of monensin include reduced blood ketones, increased serum glucose and reduced incidence of ketosis.

Indications:

It is used for: Control of Ketosis and as an aid in the reduction of bloat in cattle.

Dosage & Route of administration:

Route : Orally with metered in line water dispenser systems such as dosatron
For Whole product: 0.5-1 ml of product/60 kgb.wt for 10days.

Warnings:

• Make up a fresh solution tank daily .
• Herd observation is still required during Bloat challenge periods
• Ensure recommended doses are not exceeded.
• Optimal Bloat control is achieved when a 300 mg/cow/day dose of monensin is ingested
• Thorough mixing is essential

Contra-indications:

• Must not be used for growth promotion in ruminants intended for human consumption.
• Do not use on dogs or horses as fatal toxicosis may result.
• Do not treat cattle with products containing erythromycin, tiamulin or oleandomycin while using product.
• Do not use concurrently with other products containing monensin as the active ingredient.

Adverse effects :

• In rare cases digestive signs ( eg. Diarrhoea, ruminant stomach disorder) have been observed.
• In very rare cases, oesophagus obstruction has been observed.

Withdrawal Periods:

• Meat : Nil
• Milk : Nil

Storage conditions:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C
